Storing Peptides in South Africa's Heat

Heat is the main threat to peptide potency in South Africa. What temperature does to a peptide, how to handle summer deliveries and how to store vials.

Most peptide storage advice online is written for northern hemisphere conditions. It assumes a mild ambient temperature, a short courier leg and a house that is never above 25°C.

That is not the South African picture. A January afternoon in Pretoria or Upington regularly puts ambient temperatures in the mid-thirties, a parked delivery vehicle gets considerably hotter than the air outside it, and a package that arrives while nobody is home can spend hours at a doorstep in direct sun.

Peptides are more robust than people fear, but heat is the one variable that genuinely costs you potency. This guide covers what temperature actually does to a peptide, and what to do about it here.

What Heat Does to a Peptide

A peptide is a chain of amino acids held in a particular arrangement. Its activity depends on that arrangement surviving intact. Heat attacks it through a few distinct routes:

Hydrolysis. Peptide bonds can be cleaved by water, and the rate at which that happens rises with temperature. This is the main degradation route for a peptide sitting in solution, and it is why a reconstituted vial has a far shorter life than a dry one.

Aggregation. Warmth and mechanical stress encourage peptide molecules to clump together. Aggregated peptide is not available to do the job it was meant to do, and aggregation is generally not reversible by cooling the vial back down.

Oxidation and deamidation. Certain residues — methionine, cysteine, tryptophan, asparagine, glutamine — are chemically vulnerable, and that vulnerability increases with heat, light and time. Peptides containing them are less forgiving of poor storage than those that do not.

The important consequence is that degradation is cumulative and invisible. A vial that has spent a hot afternoon in a car does not look different. There is no smell, no colour change and usually no visible particulate. You find out through a weaker than expected response, and you are more likely to blame the protocol than the storage.

The Dry Vial Is Your Friend

The reason research peptides are supplied as a lyophilised (freeze-dried) powder is that removing water removes the main degradation pathway. A dry vial is dramatically more stable than the same peptide in solution.

That gives you a useful mental model:

  • Lyophilised powder is the durable state. Stored cold and dark, shelf life is measured in a year or more for most compounds.
  • [Reconstituted solution](/learn/how-to-store-and-reconstitute-peptides) is the fragile state. Refrigerated and preserved with bacteriostatic water, the working window is typically around 28 to 30 days, and shorter for some compounds.

The practical implication for a South African summer is simple: do not reconstitute a vial until you are ready to start using it. A powder waiting in the fridge is far safer than a solution waiting in the fridge.

Practical Storage Rules

Unreconstituted vials. Refrigerate at 2–8°C for anything you will use within the next few months. For longer-term holding, the freezer is better, with the caveat below. Keep vials in their box — light is a minor degradation route and the box is free protection.

Reconstituted vials. Fridge, always, and use within the compound's window. Keep them in the body of the fridge rather than the door, where the temperature swings every time somebody opens it.

Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles. This is the single most common storage mistake. Each cycle stresses the peptide through ice formation and concentration changes at the freezing front, and the damage accumulates. If you are freezing, freeze once and thaw once. Never refreeze a reconstituted vial.

Keep it out of the bathroom and off the windowsill. Both are worse than they look — one for humidity and temperature swings, the other for direct sun.

Handling a Courier Delivery in Summer

This is the part that is genuinely different in South Africa, and it is mostly about the last few hours of the journey.

Be there, or arrange for someone to be. The overwhelming majority of heat exposure in the chain happens after the package arrives and before anyone brings it inside. A package sitting in the sun at a gate for four hours on a Highveld afternoon is the worst thing that will happen to it.

Prefer a delivery address where someone is present during the day. A workplace is often better than a home address. Many couriers will also hold a parcel at a depot for collection, which is cooler than a doorstep.

Refrigerate on arrival. Not later that evening. As soon as it is in your hands.

A warm arrival is not automatically a write-off. Lyophilised powder tolerates a short excursion far better than solution does. For context on how manufacturers think about this, registered GLP-1 pens carry labelled allowances for storage outside the fridge — in the region of weeks below 30°C for some products — which tells you that brief, moderate excursions are survivable. What is not survivable is repeated or prolonged heat, or anything approaching a hot car interior.

When to be suspicious. Discard rather than use if a reconstituted solution is cloudy, discoloured or has visible particulate, or if a vial arrives with the powder visibly melted, caked to the side or liquefied. Cloudy solution can indicate contamination or degradation, and neither is worth the risk.

Bacteriostatic Water Matters More Here

Reconstituting with plain sterile water rather than bacteriostatic water is a mistake anywhere. In a warm climate it is a worse one.

Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative, which is what makes repeated withdrawals from a multi-use vial over several weeks reasonable. Without a preservative, a vial punctured repeatedly over a month is a bacterial growth opportunity, and warmth accelerates that too.

Swab the septum with 70% isopropyl alcohol before every single needle entry, not just the first. It takes three seconds and it is the cheapest risk reduction available.

A Simple Summer Checklist

  • Order to an address where someone will be present, or hold for depot collection
  • Refrigerate immediately on arrival, in the box, in the body of the fridge
  • Leave vials lyophilised until you are ready to begin
  • Reconstitute with bacteriostatic water, never plain sterile water
  • Swirl, never shake
  • One freeze, one thaw — never refreeze
  • Discard anything cloudy, discoloured or visibly melted
  • Do not leave a vial in a car, ever, even briefly

The Bottom Line

Peptides are not as delicate as the internet suggests, but heat is the exception, and South Africa supplies plenty of it. The two decisions that matter most are keeping vials dry until you need them and getting a delivery into a fridge quickly rather than eventually.

Neither costs anything. Both protect the potency you paid for.
