What Peptides Cost in South Africa

What research peptides actually cost in South Africa, why prices vary so widely between suppliers, and how to tell a fair price from a warning sign.

Price is usually the second question people ask about peptides, right after whether they work. It is also the question the industry answers least clearly. A lot of South African suppliers will not publish pricing at all, which forces you into a WhatsApp conversation before you know whether you are in the right ballpark.

We publish ours on every product page, so this article is not going to pretend to be neutral. What it can usefully do is explain what drives the numbers, what a fair range looks like, and which cheap prices should worry you.

The Two Markets, and Why They Differ So Much

The single biggest source of confusion is that "peptide pricing" in South Africa describes two completely different markets.

Registered pharmaceutical products. Mounjaro, Ozempic and similar. These are registered medicines dispensed on prescription. Reported pricing for registered tirzepatide has been in the region of R2 800 to R5 500 a month depending on dose. Semaglutide pricing has moved with generic entry.

Research compounds. Sold for research purposes, not approved for human use, no therapeutic claims. The same molecule in this market costs a fraction of the pharmaceutical price.

The gap is large and it is worth understanding what actually creates it, because it is not simply markup:

  • Regulatory approval costs money. Estimates of the capitalised cost of bringing a new drug to approval run into billions of rand, and that investment is recovered through the price of approved products.
  • Pharmaceutical manufacture is audited. GMP facilities, batch release testing, stability programmes and regulatory inspection are expensive and are not optional.
  • Post-market obligations continue. Pharmacovigilance, adverse event reporting and recall capability all cost money for the life of the product.
  • Distribution is controlled. Cold chain, traceability and pharmacy dispensing add cost.

A research compound carries none of those obligations. That is exactly why it is cheaper, and exactly why the quality question falls on you and your supplier rather than on a regulator.

What Research Peptides Actually Cost Here

To put real numbers to it, here is roughly where our own catalogue sits at the time of writing. Prices change, and the live catalogue is the authority, but the orders of magnitude are the useful part:

Two things are worth drawing out of that table.

Cost per vial is not cost per protocol. A 5mg BPC-157 vial at 250mcg per day is 20 days of use. What matters for budgeting is the monthly run rate, which depends on dose and frequency. Our reconstitution calculator will give you the doses per vial for any combination.

Bigger vials are usually cheaper per milligram. Where a compound is offered in several sizes, the larger one almost always costs less per mg. That is only an advantage if you will use it inside the stability window after reconstitution, which is why buying the biggest vial available is not automatically the smart move.

Why Prices Vary So Much Between Suppliers

If you shop around you will find the same named compound at wildly different prices. The reasons are not all sinister, but some are.

Legitimate reasons:

  • Purity specification. Synthesising to 99%+ and verifying it costs more than accepting whatever comes out at 95%.
  • Third-party testing. Independent analysis per batch is a real cost. A supplier who tests every batch and one who tests occasionally, or never, have different cost structures.
  • Cold chain and storage. Maintaining proper storage from receipt to delivery costs money, especially in this climate.
  • Import duties, exchange rate and freight. These move, and they move everyone's prices.

Warning signs:

  • A price far below everyone else. Peptide synthesis has a floor cost. A price well under the market is telling you something has been left out, and the usual candidates are purity, testing or the actual quantity in the vial.
  • No [Certificate of Analysis](/learn/how-to-read-a-certificate-of-analysis), or reluctance to produce one. Without independent testing, a purity claim is just a sentence on a website.
  • Underfilled vials. A vial labelled 10mg containing 7mg is a 30% price increase you cannot see. This is only detectable through testing.
  • No contact route beyond an order form. If something is wrong, you want a person.

The honest framing is this: in an unregulated market, the cheapest supplier is not the one who found efficiencies. It is usually the one who stopped paying for something you cannot see.

Working Out Your Actual Monthly Cost

A realistic budget needs four inputs, not one:

  1. 1.The compound and dose, which sets vials per month.
  2. 2.Supplies. Bacteriostatic water, insulin syringes and alcohol swabs. Modest, but not zero.
  3. 3.Bloodwork. A baseline panel and periodic retests. This is the line item most people omit and the one that protects you. Our bloodwork guide covers which markers matter for which compound class.
  4. 4.Duration. Recovery protocols run weeks. Metabolic protocols run many months, and the trial data on GLP-1 compounds shows most of the effect accruing over 12 to 18 months. Budgeting for four weeks and stopping at eight is the most common way people waste money in this space.

Is Cheaper Ever the Right Call?

Sometimes, and it is worth saying so.

Buying a larger vial of a compound you use daily and will finish inside the stability window is genuinely cheaper per dose with no downside. Buying supplies in bulk is sensible. Choosing a single well-chosen compound over a five-compound stack you cannot afford to run properly is almost always the better decision — a protocol you can sustain for the full duration beats a more elaborate one you abandon at week three.

What is not worth it is saving 30% on the compound itself by giving up verified purity. You are injecting it.

The Bottom Line

Research peptides in South Africa cost a fraction of registered pharmaceutical equivalents, for reasons that are structural rather than mysterious. Within the research market, the price spread between suppliers mostly reflects what they are and are not paying for behind the scenes.

Ask for the Certificate of Analysis, budget for the full duration rather than the first month, and treat a price well below the market as information rather than a bargain.
