You have sourced high-quality peptides. You have done your research on the protocol. But now you are staring at a small vial of white powder and wondering what to do next.
This is where many beginners get stuck. Peptide handling is not complicated, but it does require care. Done correctly, it protects the potency of the compound and ensures accurate dosing. Done carelessly, it can degrade the peptide before you ever use it.
This guide walks you through everything you need to know about reconstituting, storing and handling peptides safely.
Why Do Peptides Come as a Powder?
Most research peptides are supplied in lyophilised form, which is essentially freeze-dried. This is done deliberately. In dry powder form, peptides are far more stable and have a much longer shelf life than in liquid form.
Once a peptide is reconstituted (mixed with a liquid), it becomes more vulnerable to degradation. Temperature, light and contamination all become factors you need to manage.
What You Will Need Before You Start
Before reconstituting any peptide, make sure you have the following:
Bacteriostatic water (BAC water)
This is sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added. The benzyl alcohol acts as a preservative and prevents bacterial growth in the vial after it has been opened. Do not use plain sterile water or tap water. BAC water is available from most medical suppliers and online.
Syringes and needles
You will need insulin syringes (typically 1ml capacity) for drawing up and injecting the reconstituted peptide. These are fine-gauge, short needles and are widely available.
Alcohol swabs
To sterilise vial tops and injection sites before use.
A clean, flat surface
Good hygiene practices matter throughout this process.
How to Reconstitute a Peptide: Step by Step
Step 1: Let the vial reach room temperature
If your peptide has been stored in the freezer or fridge, allow it to come to room temperature before opening or handling. This reduces condensation inside the vial.
Step 2: Swab the vial tops
Use an alcohol swab to clean the rubber stoppers on both your peptide vial and your BAC water vial. Allow them to air dry for a few seconds.
Step 3: Draw up your BAC water
Using a clean syringe, draw up the amount of BAC water you plan to add. The volume of water you use will determine the concentration of your reconstituted peptide. (See the calculation guide below.)
Step 4: Inject slowly down the side of the vial
Gently insert the needle through the rubber stopper of the peptide vial. Angle the needle so the BAC water runs down the inside wall of the vial rather than spraying directly onto the powder. This is important. Aggressive mixing can damage the peptide structure.
Step 5: Do not shake
Once the water is in, swirl the vial gently until the powder is fully dissolved. Never shake it vigorously.
Step 6: Inspect the solution
The reconstituted peptide should be a clear liquid with no visible particles. If it appears cloudy or has floating debris, do not use it.
Working Out Concentration and Dosing
This is where many beginners get confused, but it is straightforward once you understand the relationship between the amount of BAC water you add and the resulting concentration.
Example:
You have a 5mg vial of BPC-157. You add 2ml of BAC water.
Your concentration is: 5mg / 2ml = 2.5mg per ml, or 2500mcg per ml.
If your target dose is 250mcg per injection, you would draw up 0.1ml (10 units on an insulin syringe).
Write this calculation down and keep it with your vial. It is easy to forget, especially when you are managing multiple compounds.
How to Store Peptides Before and After Reconstitution
Lyophilised (unreconstituted) peptides:
Store in the freezer for long-term storage (up to 12 to 24 months depending on the compound). Store in the fridge if you plan to use within a few weeks. Keep away from light and moisture.
Reconstituted peptides:
Store in the refrigerator at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. Do not freeze a reconstituted peptide. Most reconstituted peptides are stable for 4 to 6 weeks when stored correctly with BAC water.
Always store your vials upright. Keep them away from the fridge door where temperature fluctuations are greater.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Using plain sterile water instead of BAC water
Without the preservative, your reconstituted peptide can develop bacterial contamination within days. Always use BAC water.
Shaking the vial
This introduces air bubbles and can physically damage the peptide structure. Swirl gently instead.
Leaving the vial at room temperature
Peptides degrade much faster at room temperature. Once reconstituted, return the vial to the fridge immediately after drawing your dose.
Reusing needles
Every draw should use a fresh needle. Reusing needles introduces contamination risk and also causes the needle to blunt, making injections more uncomfortable.
Not labelling your vials
Once you are running more than one compound, unlabelled vials become a genuine risk. Write the compound name, date of reconstitution and concentration on each vial.
A Note on Injection Technique
Subcutaneous injections are administered into the fatty tissue just beneath the skin, typically in the abdomen, thigh or outer upper arm. The technique is similar to how diabetics self-administer insulin.
Pinch a small fold of skin. Insert the needle at roughly a 45-degree angle. Inject slowly and steadily. Apply gentle pressure with the swab after removing the needle.
If you are new to self-injection, take your time. The needle gauge used for peptides (typically 29 to 31G) is very fine and most people find the injections significantly less uncomfortable than they expected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use pre-mixed peptide solutions?
Some suppliers sell pre-mixed peptides in liquid form. While this is more convenient, the stability and shelf life are shorter, and you have less control over concentration. For research purposes, starting from lyophilised powder is generally preferred.
What if I accidentally freeze my reconstituted peptide?
It is best to avoid this. Freezing and thawing can affect peptide integrity. If this happens, inspect the solution carefully before use and be aware that potency may have been reduced.
How do I dispose of used syringes safely?
Used needles should be placed in a sharps container. Many pharmacies accept used sharps for safe disposal.
